Empowering students through discipline, confidence, and character development.
Our Mission
At Brentwood Martial Arts, our mission is to empower students of all ages to develop discipline, confidence, and character through the time-honored practice of martial arts. We are committed to fostering an environment of respect, perseverance, and personal growth—where each student is encouraged to strive for excellence, both on and off the mat. Through structured training, thoughtful mentorship, and a curriculum that blends tradition with innovation, we aim to shape not only skilled martial artists, but principled individuals prepared to lead with integrity.
Our Philosophy
At Brentwood Martial Arts, our philosophy extends beyond mere self-defense, embracing a comprehensive path of personal evolution. It is grounded in core principles that guide our training and character development:
  • Effort: The dedication to continuous practice and unwavering commitment to improvement.
  • Etiquette: Cultivating deep respect for instructors, peers, the art itself, and oneself.
  • Sincerity: Approaching all training with honesty, authenticity, and a genuine desire for growth.
  • Self-Control: Developing discipline over both physical actions and mental responses, on and off the mat.
  • Character: Building inner strength, integrity, perseverance, and leadership qualities essential for life.
Through these principles, we aim to shape not only skilled martial artists but principled individuals, prepared to lead with integrity and purpose.
Our Animal Archetypes
Our karate practice draws inspiration from the wisdom and characteristics of five animal archetypes, each teaching unique attributes:
Tiger
Symbolizes strength, courage, and direct power, embodying a powerful, frontal assault.
Dragon
Represents wisdom, spiritual growth, and adaptability, emphasizing fluid and elusive movements.
Snake
Teaches flexibility, evasion, and precision, focusing on subtle movements and swift counter-attacks.
Crane
Embodies balance, grace, and patience, focusing on defensive techniques and precise strikes.
Leopard
Illustrates speed, agility, and explosive power, featuring rapid, decisive strikes and quick footwork.
Kempo Belt Ranks
The belt system in Kempo Karate signifies a student's progression, knowledge, and mastery of techniques. Each color represents a new stage of learning and commitment on the martial arts journey.
At Brentwood Martial Arts, students advance through a structured belt system:
  • White Belt: The beginning, symbolizing purity and readiness to learn fundamental stances, blocks, and strikes.
  • Yellow Belt: Represents the rising sun, indicating the first rays of knowledge and basic understanding of Kempo principles.
  • Orange Belt: Signifies the growing strength and energy, as students develop more complex combinations and power.
  • Green Belt: Symbolizes growth and development, marking a deeper understanding of techniques and forms.
  • Blue Belt: Represents the vastness of the sky, indicating a student's expanded knowledge and ability to apply techniques with fluidity.
  • Brown Belt: The earth, signifying maturity and solid foundation, preparing students for advanced concepts and leadership.
  • Black Belt: Represents mastery and responsibility. This is not an end, but a new beginning, symbolizing the pursuit of lifelong learning and teaching.
Master William Sampson 6th Degree Black Belt
Head Instructor, Brentwood Martial Arts
Over Three Decades of Experience
Dedicated to Student Development
Professional Biography:
Master William Sampson is a sixth-degree black belt and the Head Instructor at Brentwood Martial Arts, where he has been a cornerstone of the teaching faculty since 1997.
With over three decades of experience, Master Sampson is recognized for his deep commitment to technical excellence, student development, and the continued evolution of martial arts instruction.
His journey began in 1990, when, as a quiet and reserved child, he was enrolled in martial arts to develop the confidence, discipline, and resilience needed to navigate the social challenges of school life. Upon relocating to California, he formally began training in Chinese Kempo, quickly discovering a lifelong passion.
Brentwood Martial Arts was affiliated with a broader Kempo Karate organization known for integrating diverse disciplines—including Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, Filipino Martial Arts, Kung Fu, and Boxing—into its training methodology. This unique and comprehensive approach allowed Master Sampson to immerse himself in a multifaceted curriculum, further deepening his technical knowledge and philosophical grounding.
After earning his black belt, Master Sampson relocated to Los Angeles and began teaching at the Brentwood location, where he has remained ever since. His competitive career took him across the western United States, participating in regional tournaments and sharing the lessons of the mat with his students.
In the early 2000s, he was invited to join the instructor training program within the organization, mentoring the next generation of martial arts educators. Alongside a long-time training partner, he committed to continually refining the pedagogy, updating methodologies, and integrating contemporary principles while remaining grounded in traditional martial values.
Their work eventually expanded into teaching seminars and workshops across other regions. In 2018, Master Sampson was formally awarded the rank of sixth-degree black belt. Today, he continues to lead instruction for students of all ages and skill levels, maintaining an unwavering dedication to the craft.
Nearly 30 years since first stepping into the Brentwood dojo, he remains as inspired as ever—devoted to fostering strength, confidence, and character in every student he teaches!
